Written for St George's, Hanover Square, with French connections which emanated from a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.'appealing

Choral Review
Realistically priced in all cases and expertly proof-read (except a few slurs obliterating the text, an error so very easy to correct), these works are from a respected stable (especially here in the West Country where Mr Le Fleming worked as a Music Advisor in Devon for so many years).
I found myself fascinated by all of them; but beware, they are not easy. Complexity of thought cannot easily be squeezed into simplicity of language, by accessibility will not be a problem here given the right performers, musicians, circumstances and surroundings.
The Missa Brevis was written for (and would sound best performed by) a Chamber Choir, in this case the professional small ensemble at St. George's Hanover Square; it sets the Gloria but not the Credo, to the Latin text. An intellectually deeply satisfying work, it relies heavily on the development and unfolding of germinal ideas (or motifs if you like) including falling appoggiaturas. Mr. Le. Fleming seems more at home in the shorter sections, but keeps the difficulty level within reasonable bounds except perhaps in the Amen section of the Cum Sancto. The urgent rhythms of the Gloria are noteworthy, as is has habit of keeping rhythmic demands simpler than harmonic ones. Texturally the interest is maintained, from appealing melodic lines to cascading effects (Sanctus) and the astringency of the Benedictus, whose Hosanna section reminds me of Tippet (the coda of the Concerto for Double String Orchestra), not for the first time in this work that Tippet has been suggested. A modern work, yes, not post-Romantic, attractive in a cerebral way, with a penchant for cadences ending on a second inversion chord. Lovely, but limited to he right choral situations.

Antony Le Fleming's attractively melodic and very singable Missa Brevis written for Simon Williams and the Choir of St. George's, Hanover Square, London comes from the recently established ANA Publishing Ltd .
If the other works in ANA's growing list are of similar quality to this excellent new piece, they deserve to do well.
