A refreshingly unusual Advent/Xmas setting with words by Peter Dale evoking a mood of mystery and foreboding. 'gloriously pictorial' (Organists' Review).
The voice-parts are straightforward.
In the Dark-Time is a carol, setting a text by Peter Dale in a discordant style of brooding mystery which touches on the sinister in places, making much use of augmented 2nds; the musical texture and atmosphere follow the demands of the text in becoming warmer in the second half. A slightly astringent flavour overall, gloriously pictorial, designed for performance during Christmastide rather than occasions like Family Carol Services - I am fascinated by this piece; it has an intellectual appeal which may not suit everyone.
