Prayer through Candles These are the words written on the notice below the candle display. Lighting a candle is a prayer in itself. Within the Christian faith, this prayer tradition probably dates from the time of the first martyrs when people lit candles outside their tombs in the catacombs in Rome. A candle, when prayerfully lit, shines as a sign of God’s presence amongst us – calling to mind Jesus the light of the world. Its flickering flame shows us that the prayers we offer rise to heaven day and night. Through lighting a candle for others we show our concern for them and solidarity with them as we hold them before God in prayer. And as your candle is joined by those lit by other people, together they become a sign of the Christian community in this place: many small lights coming together to shine more brightly as God’s holy people who are ambassadors of hope, forgiveness and love to a world that is so desperately in need of them.
