Isn't it grand! My very own Wurlitzer organ, built in 1978 and sounding fine. Installed in my music room. It was a long time ago that I pestered my piano teacher, Mr Burgess, to give me organ lessons on the Parish Church organ in Ashton- under-Lyne. He finally relented and gave me lessons on alternate weeks with the piano. He was very old at the time, and he hadn't a car. So I can understand his reluctance at a bus ride and walk to Church to teach me. I practised two evenings a week and can remember the dark grave yard, and even darker Church, as I collected the key from behind a notice board and crossed the Church to the cupboard where the lights were. I always forgot the torch. It was a beautiful old organ, before it was renovated, with a mellow tone. The new one was, of course, magnificent, but lost that warm tone. My second teacher was Dr Herbert Winterbottom, who was an amazing character, with a bubbly personality. Just the right person to enthuse a teenager. When I met him again a few years ago, he had a real pipe organ in his cellar. Well, I haven't a cellar, and with visions of pipes sticking through the roof, I've got the next best thing, complete with two octaves on the pedal board.
