The new DipABRSM teaching diplomas require far more in the way of actual teaching experience than the old LRAM did.
The exam then was more of an extension to the Grade 8 exam, with a Viva, Fingering-tests and separate Aural and Written examinations.
I am not suggesting that it was easier to pass --far from it, but from our own teachers' point-of-view, it was easier to work towards as the criteria for the practical exam were much more clear-cut:
- 52 technical items (scales, arpeggios with different touches) in every key
- A Bach Prelude and Fugue
- A complete Classical sonata
- A Romantic or Modern piece
The idea of taking teaching-materials into the exam was unheard of - we had to memorise examples of teaching materials for the viva.
