Dents on a clarinet can change the tone of the instrument, but not enough to cause any serious worry about. Scratches on the other hand are like a scratch on a human, it can get infected. A scratch can make the wood on a clarinet swell and lose all of its tone, and at the same time move the keys out of place. This can also happen on bake-lite clarinets, but it is a rarity.
