Avoid touching pad-skins and felts with cleaning cloths.
Allowed to dry and accumulate, Perspiration will literally eat away at the plating into the base metal. Trevor J. James Flutes use a three stage plating process on tubes and keys to give maximum durability.
The assembling and disassembling of the instrument can also have a severe effect on the Flutes performance. From the moment the sections are lifted from the case, damage to the mechanisms can occur.
Always lift the sections without touching the keywork. Mechanical clutches can bend over time and necessitate repeated adjustments, which would be otherwise unnecessary. The new Prolite cases on the Trevor James 10x models have been specifically designed to reduce this problem.
Fit the Headjoint by holding the main body by the socket and the Head-joint below the lip-plate. Fit the Foot-joint by holding the main-body by the socket and the Foot-joint with the thumb placed on the key cups not the touch-pieces.
To disassemble simply reverse the procedure.
If Flutes are becoming noisy and notes are becoming more difficult to play it could well be time for the instrument to be serviced by a qualified repairer.
Like the section on cleaning, if done at 12 to 18 month intervals, the Flute will continue to work with the player and not against them.
By observing the above points, a great many problems can be avoided.
