G Scale: Modifications to a Bachmann Climax Loco 7 - Wood fuel
|

by P R Bunce

This is a logging locomotive, so I decided to have (scrap) logs for the fuel. I used some twigs from my Hawthorn tree, but any wood of about 10mm diameter is suitable; cut it to random lengths of about 25 &--8211; 30mm long, my small circular saw was very useful here. Now the difficult bit &--8211; great care is needed here so please be very careful!!

Using a heavy Stanley type metal handled knife, and a hammer on a protected surface quarter cut all the pieces you have cut. DO NOT use the knife alone, but instead use it rather like an axe, with the hammer providing the weight to cut the logs &--8211; a couple of good hard taps on the Stanley type knife will generally do it I found.

Fix the quartered logs on top of the coal load; I found that the plentiful use of dark brown window frame sealant helped to stick them on the &--8216;quite curved&--8217; top of the coal. The intention is to totally cover the original coal, including the small semicircular water pipe on the fireman&--8217;s side.

Here is a photo, showing the quartered logs in the bunker
