During the Sonlight Kindergarten Program there is a book called The Light at Tern Rock.. It looks like such an average book but this book led us on a great adventure. We studied lighthouses in as much detail as you can with a 5, 3 and 1 year old.
We all made a model that flashed, I'll include the picture soon. It is not my idea but one from a book modified to suit our needs. I just can't remember the book so, whoever had the root idea. Thank you for all the enjoyment it passed on.
We looked at lighthouses on the web and coloured in a picture or two.
We enjoyed the Trinity House web site and found out that all UK houses are remote control now. The keepers are there to keep house and repair when needed.
Then we ended our visit with a great trip to Flamborough lighthouse. There they have two lighthouses.
The new one has a half-hour tour that is well worth doing. The lighthouse keeper was very informative and the view is well worth the climb. The lens was amazing to see and we were all wrong in thinking that the light flashes, it doesn't the lens rotates and produces the flash effect. Each flash is also unique to each lighthouse
The original one, a good way inland, is just a tower that they used to put a fire on top. We were told that it has wooden stairs inside and it is open during August, sometimes. I don&--8217;t think I fancy going all that way up on rickety wooden stairs!
It was £1.50 for adults and £1.00 for children. For more information you can contact Trinity House on 0171 481 6900. There address is Trinity house, Tower hill. London. EC3 4DH.
