How does one start?
Would you recommend sending an 8-year-old beginner to a 14-year-old Grade 7 school student?
How old were YOU when you started teaching the piano?
How did YOU start?
I gave my first lesson when I was about 15 years old, when my teacher (Joy Young of Hall Green, Birmingham) went to visit her family in Malaya and wanted some of her pupils "looked after", so she shared them out among her older students on a temporary basis.
I remember entering my first AB candidate whom I had taught from scratch, when I was 16. Much to our mutual delight, she passed Grade 1 piano with Distinction.
The best time for aspiring piano teachers to start is surely when they are still having lessons themselves and can refer any problems to their own teachers, rather than wait until they leave university, flat broke, with the urgent need to earn a living, and no teaching experience at all?
