The Phoenix Fund was set up my Tameside Council to raise money for the traders who lost there shops during the Ashton Market Hall fire of 25 may 2004.
It was not to help rebuild the hall. The hall was insured. It was and is totally for the traders.
Named after the legendary bird it is to assist the holders to rise from the ashes and trade as before.
In addition, as Harry Potter fans will know, the tears of the Phoenix heals and the song brings strength.
The traders have needed strength and courage to get through the summer months. Healing will come when the public return to the new, temporary, market hall, opening on Friday 16th 2004.
I cannot commend enought the amount the council have done for the traders since the fire. Their level of communication and practical help has been amazing and appreciated.
