There are rumours of a Wham! ; George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley; who announced their decision to split in 1986, are planning a "pop extravaganza" to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut hit, George Michael is releasing a single to celebrate 30 years since the group's first single. The first single by Eighties pop group Wham!, entered the UK charts on June 29 1982. To celebrate the release of 'Wham Rap' George Michael has announced he will release a new single on the same day this year. "They probably won't do a long tour or release new material like Take That but they do want to commemorate the event with a big gig... and an even bigger party afterwards!” an insider said.
The single arrives amid rumours that Wham! will be reuniting. Sources close to Michael and co-Wham! singer Andrew Ridgeley say they could be reforming for a one-off gig. The 'Careless Whisper' singer has said of his impending anniversary: "Although I know the music industry tradition on such occasions is to list the hundreds of millions of albums sold, the number of records broken and awards received over all those years, I would simply like to say thank you."
After Wham! split in 1986 Michael has continued a successful music career while Ridgeley lives away from the spotlight in Cornwall with his wife, Bananarama singer Keren Woodward.
Michael announced he will be releasing new single 'White Light' and wrote a message to his supporters via his website: 'Most of my fans realise that I dreamed of a career as a singer-songwriter from an early age, but never in my wildest imaginings could I have known that I would still be here thirty years later, healthy, happy, and feeling that I still have so much more music to give.'
It will be the first time Michael will be heard singing since he was rushed to hospital with pneumonia in November last year, forcing the singer to abandon his solo tour. The Symphonica tour will begin again this year in September. He is also working on his first studio album in four years.
Wham! sold 25 million records worldwide while the band were together. Michael's new single can be heard on the radio from June 26 and can be bought from August 12 this year.
