Our Udu Drum is a distinctive, quality, hand-made clay musical instrument with a gorgeous terracotta finish, which completes any number of percussion sets. The terracotta Udu is a unique clay drum that originates from Nigeria, and it looks just like a large terracotta pot. The clay Udu Drum can make a variety of different tones, including an airy bass tone known in India as the gumki. Udu drums are named because Udu means vessel in the language of the Nigerian Ibo people, much like a clay pot or terracotta water jug. A similar clay pot drum known as the ghatam originated in southern India.
This high quality terracotta Udu drum can be used for lots of sounds which reverberate in and around the clay body. Its versatility is on a par with that of a djembe drum.
How to play this terracotta Udu drum: Hold the clay pot on your lap with the neck pointed past your hip, and the hole on the side of the terracotta body pointed up towards you. Tap the clay body and skin of the terracotta Udu with your palms and fingers and hit the mouth of the hole with an open hand to create a variety of sounds.
